The premise is that reshooting is expensive and cropping is free, so the goal of a product shoot is to come away with frames that can be cut several ways. That is a framing skill rather than an editing one. What follows is organized by when the decision gets made, because the ones made early are the ones that cannot be undone later.
Pick the tallest shape you will need
List the shapes this shoot has to feed. Then find the tallest one, because that is the only dimension you cannot add afterwards. If a vertical — a Story, a Reel cover, a TikTok still — is anywhere on the list, the shoot is a vertical shoot, and everything else gets cut out of it.
The practical consequence is unintuitive: you set the camera further back than the shot needs, in portrait orientation, and accept that the frame will look loose on the monitor. It is supposed to. The composition you are protecting is not the one in the viewfinder, it is the four different ones you will take out of it.
Match widths, and the heights take care of themselves
The arithmetic gets easy if you pin one dimension. Fix the width at 1080 px — the number most feeds converge on — and every shape becomes a height:

Read that column of heights as a stack. A 1080 × 1920 vertical contains a centered 1080 × 1080 square with 420 px left over above it and 420 px below. That is your working budget of expendable space, and where you spend it is the whole craft: put the product in the centered square, and use the bands for surface, backdrop, a prop that establishes scale, or nothing at all. Anything in those bands must be able to vanish without the picture failing.
Widths behave differently, and worse. Cutting a wide shape out of a tall frame trims the left and right, and that is where props, hands and context tend to sit. The full arithmetic of what survives which crop is worked through in our safe zone guide; the short version for shoot day is that the horizontal margins are far less generous than the vertical ones, so keep everything that matters well inside the frame's sides.
Leave room for the things that are not yours
A feed does not show your image alone. Interface elements sit on top of it: captions, action buttons, profile rows, duration badges, and on vertical formats a substantial band of controls along the bottom and the right edge. Exact safe-area figures do get published for advertising formats and they change, so this guide does not print numbers we could not confirm. The durable rule survives without them: the 420 px bands top and bottom of a vertical are the right place to be empty, and they are also where chrome lands. Composing so those bands are decorative rather than load-bearing solves the UI problem and the crop problem with one decision.
The same logic applies to text you add later. A pin or a cover image often needs a headline, and the time to make room for it is while the shot is being lit, not afterwards when the only available space is across the product. Shoot one frame with the product low and a clean area above it. It costs thirty seconds and it is the frame you will use most.
The 4:5 boundary is the one that bites
Instagram's help center states that a photo with a width between 320 and 1080 px is kept at its original resolution as long as its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5 — a height between 566 and 1350 px at a width of 1080. Written as decimals, that range is 1.91 down to 0.8, and this is where cross-posting quietly goes wrong: a Pinterest-shaped 2:3 image is 0.667 and a Story-shaped 9:16 is 0.5625. Both are outside the stated range for a feed photo. Your tall Pin master is not a feed post; treating it as one hands the resizing decision to software instead of to you.

Pinterest publishes its own numbers plainly: a standard Pin is recommended at a 2:3 aspect ratio, or 1000 × 1500 px, with a file size limit of 20 MB on desktop and 32 MB in-app, in PNG or JPEG. Pinterest also notes that images are converted to 8-bit RGB JPEG, which is worth knowing before you spend effort on a 16-bit export — and a reminder that saving a PNG in sRGB is the way to preserve quality through that conversion.

Instagram maintains a help page on Reel size and aspect ratios at help.instagram.com/1038071743007909, but we could not extract its current figures from a readable primary source, so no Reel dimensions are asserted here. Treat 9:16 as the working shape and check that page directly before building a template around specific pixel values. Likewise, no TikTok or Facebook figures appear on this page for the same reason.
Resolution is not your problem
Sellers worry that cropping hard will leave them short of pixels. The arithmetic says otherwise. Cut a 9:16 vertical out of a 24-megapixel camera frame (6000 × 4000) and you keep the full height and 2250 px of width — more than twice what a feed will use. Do the same to an ordinary 12 MP phone photo (4032 × 3024) and you still have 1701 × 3024. Even the most aggressive crop on this page leaves you comfortably above 1080 px wide.
Which means the thing you lose to cropping is never sharpness. It is composition — the prop that established scale, the hand that gave it life, the negative space that made it feel considered. That loss is invisible in a thumbnail and obvious in a feed, and it is the reason to place each crop deliberately rather than accept a centered one. A listing photo is not a social photo
None of this makes one file do every job. A marketplace listing photo is shot on a clean sweep so the product reads instantly against a wall of competitors; that same image in a feed reads as an advertisement and gets scrolled past. The efficiency is not in reusing the file, it is in shooting both setups in one session while the product is already styled and the lights are already placed.
A workable session: build the clean-background set first, shoot the listing frames, and get those right — the pixel requirements for those live in our Etsy image sizes guide. Then, without moving the product, change the surface and add context for the social frames, shooting vertically and loosely per everything above. Two setups, one session, and a set of files where each one was actually framed for where it is going. The shoot-day list
- Camera in portrait orientation, on a tripod, further back than the shot appears to need.
- Product and anything that must be legible inside the centered square.
- The 420 px bands above and below deliberately expendable — surface, backdrop or nothing.
- One extra frame with the product low and clean space above it, for text.
- Nothing important near the left and right edges; horizontal margin is the scarce one.
- A scale reference in at least one frame, placed inside the square rather than out at the edge.
- Before you leave the set: crop a test frame to 9:16 and to 1:1 and look at both. Anything that fails, you can still fix while everything is set up.
That last item is the whole discipline in one line. Checking the crops on set costs a minute; finding out three weeks later that every photo in the library is unusable vertically costs a reshoot.
