How to price for profit on Etsy, Amazon & eBay
Every fee chips away at your margin
The sticker price is never what you keep. A listing fee, a transaction or referral percentage, payment processing, and a per-order fee all come out before you've paid for materials or shipping. On a $25 sale those fees can quietly eat several dollars, so the profit you feel and the profit you bank are two different numbers. Enter your real cost and price above to see exactly how much each line takes.
Price for a target margin, not a round number
Instead of guessing a price and hoping it works, pick the margin you want to keep and work backwards. The "minimum sale price" panel solves for the lowest price that still leaves your target margin — or a target dollar profit — after every fee. That keeps your pricing consistent across products with different material costs.
Offsite Ads and TACOS change the math
Etsy's Offsite Ads charge 12–15% on orders that came from an offsite ad, and on Amazon your TACOS (total ad spend ÷ sales) is a percentage of revenue too. Both behave like an extra percentage fee on the sales they touch, so build them into your price rather than treating advertising as an afterthought.
VAT and GST for international sellers
In the UK, EU, Australia and Canada the platform typically adds VAT or GST on top of its own seller fees — for example Etsy adds 20% VAT on UK seller fees. That tax-on-fees is a real cost and is included here when you choose a region. The separate sales tax or VAT a buyer pays on the sale price is collected and remitted for you, so it's pass-through and never counted as your profit.
Frequently asked questions
Which fees does this calculator include?
It includes each platform's listing/insertion fee, the transaction or referral fee, payment processing, per-order fees, any advertising percentage you enter, and — when you pick a region with VAT/GST — the tax the platform charges on its own fees. It does not count buyer-side sales tax or VAT collected on the sale (that is pass-through), currency conversion, or Amazon's monthly subscription (which is waived for Handmade and isn't a per-sale cost). Default rates are US, last checked July 2026 — always confirm the current rates on the platform, since they change and vary by country and category.
How is the minimum sale price calculated?
You set a target profit margin (your net profit as a percentage of revenue). Keeping your costs, shipping and ad rate fixed, the calculator solves for the sale price where your take-home profit hits that margin after all fees. If the fees plus your target margin add up to more than 100% of revenue, that target isn't reachable and we'll tell you instead of showing a misleading number.
Is this financial or tax advice?
No. This is a free estimating tool to help you sanity-check pricing. It doesn't account for taxes, refunds, chargebacks, or your local regulations, and it isn't financial or tax advice. Use it as a starting point and verify the exact fees and taxes for your situation.
