Multi-word phrases like “custom leather keychain” beat single words for Etsy search.

Worked example: nine messy tags rewritten into thirteen clean ones

A personalised leather keychain listing arrives with a long title and nine tags. Below is exactly what this page reports for it, and what the same listing looks like once the warnings are cleared.

    Before

The title is 155 characters across 21 words, so the meter reads 155 / 140 and the advice line says “15 characters over.” The nine tags come back like this:

Personalized Leather Keychain, Custom Name Keyring, Handmade Gift for Him, Monogrammed Leather Key Fob, Anniversary Gift for Boyfriend, Groomsmen Gift Idea

    • 4 tags are over 20 characters. Etsy will reject the extra characters — shorten the highlighted tags.
    • 2 duplicate tags. Etsy won't let you save the same tag twice — replace duplicates with fresh phrases.
    • 4 single-word tags. Multi-word phrases match how buyers search — combine them into longer keywords where you can.
    • You're using 9 of 13 tags. Fill every slot — unused tags are free SEO you're leaving behind.

    After

The title loses its repeated words and drops to 119 characters across 16 words — comfortably inside 140, with the strongest keywords still first. The four over-length tags get split into shorter phrases rather than deleted, the duplicate Keychain is replaced, and the single-word tags are absorbed into pairs. That fills all thirteen slots:

Personalized Leather Keychain, Custom Name Keyring, Monogram Key Fob, Handmade Anniversary Gift for Him, Groomsmen Gift

    • All 13 tags used, all within length, no duplicates, all multi-word. Nicely optimized.

Note that the longest surviving tag is 19 characters. Etsy counts the spaces, so a three-word phrase is realistically your ceiling — “personalized gift for boyfriend” was never going to fit at 31 characters, and splitting it into “personalized gift” and “boyfriend gift” puts both halves in front of search rather than losing eleven characters to the cut.

    Frequently asked questions

What are Etsy's title and tag limits?

An Etsy listing title can be up to 140 characters. You get 13 tags, and each tag can be up to 20 characters including spaces. This tool counts both live and warns you before you hit those limits, so nothing gets silently cut off when you save the listing. Those 140 characters are generous by comparison, so don't reuse an Etsy title verbatim on a cross-listing: from 27 July 2026 Amazon allows just 75 characters including spaces outside the media categories, and Amazon's 75-character title rule and how to decide what survives is the better starting point there.

Why does it warn me about single-word tags?

Etsy's search rewards specific, multi-word phrases (long-tail keywords) far more than broad single words. A tag like “leather keychain” matches how buyers actually search, while “leather” competes with thousands of unrelated listings. Single-word tags aren't wrong — the tool just nudges you to use each of your 13 slots as efficiently as possible. Using all 13 tags with distinct phrases is the goal.

Does duplicate tag detection catch near-duplicates?

It catches exact duplicates ignoring case and surrounding spaces (so “Gift” and “gift ” are treated as the same). Etsy itself won't let you save two identical tags, so this flags them before you try. It doesn't judge close variations like singular vs. plural — those can be intentional and useful.
