What follows is a diagnostic list rather than a tutorial. Each entry names a symptom you can look for in your own image, the optical rule that produces it in the real world, and the smallest change that fixes it. Nothing here needs special software; the reasoning applies whether you are painting a shadow by hand, using a generator, or deciding to reshoot.
The product is hovering
- Symptom
The object reads as pasted on rather than placed down. Often there is a shadow — a soft grey oval a little below the product — and it still floats.
- Physics
Where an object touches a surface, almost no light can reach the gap. That contact line is the darkest, hardest-edged part of any shadow in the world, and it is not optional: a mug on a table has a near-black hairline where the base meets the wood, and the softer pool spreads out from there. A shadow that is uniformly soft has no contact line, so the eye reads the object as suspended above its shadow rather than resting on it.
- Fix
Add a small, dark, tight shadow directly under the footprint — the actual area of contact, not the object's silhouette — and let the wider soft shadow sit beneath it. Two elements, not one. If you only ever change one thing on this page, change this.
One blur radius for the whole shadow
- Symptom
The shadow is equally fuzzy everywhere, like a silhouette behind frosted glass.
- Physics
Shadow softness comes from the light source having size. A point of the shadow close to the object can only "see" a sliver of the source, so its edge is sharp; a point far away sees more of the source, so its edge is smeared. The penumbra therefore widens with distance from the contact point. This is why your own hand's shadow is crisp at the wrist and vague at the fingertips when held away from a wall.
- Fix
Grade the softness. Sharp and dark where the object meets the ground, progressively softer and lighter as the shadow extends away. In practice: two or three overlapping shadow shapes at increasing blur and decreasing opacity, rather than one blurred copy.
Two suns
- Symptom
Nothing looks wrong in isolation, but the image feels subtly wrong at a glance. The product was photographed with the light coming from one side, and the shadow was added falling toward the same side, or straight down when the photograph says otherwise.
- Physics
A shadow falls directly away from the light, and the light's position is already recorded in your photograph. The specular highlight — the bright spot on a glaze, a metal rim, a curved plastic edge — sits on the side facing the source. So does the brighter half of any gradient across the product's body.
- Fix
Find the highlight before you draw anything. Shadow direction runs from the highlight, through the object, and out the far side. If the highlight is upper-left, the shadow goes toward lower-right. If the product is lit evenly from overhead with no directional highlight, the only honest shadow is a symmetric one directly beneath it.
A shadow of impossible length
- Symptom
A long, dramatic shadow stretching away from a product that was clearly photographed under bright, even studio light.
- Physics
Shadow length is fixed by how high the light sits, and the relationship is unforgiving:
shadow length = object height ÷ tan(light elevation)For a 12 cm candle: a light 60° above the horizon casts a 6.9 cm shadow; at 45° it is 12 cm, exactly the candle's height; at 30° it stretches to 20.8 cm. Run it backwards and a shadow twice the object's height implies a light only 26.6° above the horizon — late-afternoon sun through a window, which comes with warm color, hard edges and strong side modeling on the product itself. A softly lit, neutral studio shot does not have that light in it.
- Fix
Keep the shadow shorter than the product is tall unless the photograph genuinely shows low, directional light. Short reads as "well lit". Long reads as "someone added this".
The shadow is black
- Symptom
The shadow looks like a hole cut in the background rather than a dimmer patch of it. Worst on white backgrounds, where a heavy grey blob is unmissable.
- Physics
A shadow is not an absence of light, it is a region receiving less light. Whatever reaches it — bounce off the surrounding surface, ambient skylight, fill from a reflector — still carries the color of the scene. Real shadows on white paper are pale warm greys; shadows on a wooden surface pick up the wood. Pure black at high opacity is a value that only occurs in a scene with a single hard source and no fill at all.
- Fix
Lower the opacity considerably — the wide part of a soft shadow is usually far lighter than instinct suggests — and tint the shadow toward the background's hue rather than toward neutral black. Reserve near-black for the contact line only, where the physics genuinely supports it.
An entire catalog lit by one preset
- Symptom
Individually each image is fine. Seen as a grid on your shop page, they are subtly unsettling — a tall vase, a flat sticker sheet and a small ring all carrying the same shadow.
- Physics
Shadow size, length and softness all scale with the object's height and footprint. A tall object casts a longer shadow than a short one under the same light; a flat object resting on a surface has almost no cast shadow at all, only a thin contact line. Applying identical settings across a catalog asserts a lighting setup that changes shape to match each product, which is impossible.
- Fix
Group products by rough height and footprint and use one set of shadow values per group, not one set for the shop. Flat items — prints, stickers, cards, fabric squares — should get a contact line and essentially nothing else. A related trap: a mirrored copy of the product used as a reflection shows the object from the wrong angle, because a real reflection reveals the underside, not a flipped view of the top.
Where a shadow becomes a liability
All of the above assumes a shadow helps. On an Amazon main image it may not. Amazon's published standards for the MAIN image call for a pure white background at RGB 255, 255, 255 with the product filling roughly 85–100% of the frame, and no text, graphics, logos or watermarks (Seller Central guidance, checked July 2026). Two consequences follow. First, that published wording addresses backgrounds and added graphics; we could not verify a statement that settles the question of shadows either way, so this page does not claim one exists. Second, and concretely: a shadow occupies pixels, which means the canvas grows and the product's share of the frame shrinks — a real problem when the requirement is expressed as a percentage of frame fill. If a shadowed version is headed for a main image slot, re-crop it afterwards to bring the product back up to the required fill; the arithmetic of that crop is covered in our safe zone guide. Secondary images are where a cast shadow earns its keep with far less to lose.
Squint at the image until detail disappears. What survives is the tonal structure — and a bad shadow survives squinting as an obvious dark blob detached from the product, while a good one reads as the object sitting on something. Then flip the image horizontally. Mistakes in light direction that your eye had stopped noticing become obvious the moment the composition is unfamiliar.
When to reshoot instead
A generated shadow is a reconstruction of information that was thrown away when the product was cut out. It is very good at the common case — an object on a plain surface, evenly lit — and it cannot rescue a photograph whose own lighting is inconsistent, because you would be adding a correct shadow to an incorrect image. If the product's highlights and its ambient shading disagree with each other, that is a lighting problem, and no amount of shadow work downstream will settle it.
For the ordinary case, though, this is a five-minute job.
