This page is about the geometry, not about any one site's pixel dimensions. If you want the dimensions themselves, our Etsy image sizes guide lists them slot by slot. What follows applies wherever a single upload has to survive being re-shaped: a search grid, a listing page on a phone, a Pin, a Reel cover, a category tile in an app you have never seen.
One formula, and it is short
Write an aspect ratio as a single number: width divided by height. A square is 1. A 4:3 landscape is 1.333. A 9:16 vertical is 0.5625. Call your photo's ratio S and the shape being asked for T. A center crop keeps whichever dimension is already correct and trims the other. So:
That last sentence is the part people get wrong. A single crop only ever cuts one pair of opposite edges. The reason product photos end up mutilated is not any individual crop — it is that the same file gets sent through several crops with different ratios, and the cuts land on different pairs of edges. Two crops in opposite directions do not leave you a strip. They leave you a box.
What a square source loses to each shape
Square is the usual master because it is the safest single upload for marketplace grids. Here is what each common target takes out of it. The percentages are of the original image area; the trim column is per edge.

Two things fall out of that table immediately. First, the mild-looking shapes are genuinely mild: 4:5 costs you a tenth of each side and 4:3 costs an eighth of each end. Second, the vertical and ultra-wide shapes are brutal — a 9:16 crop throws away more of your photo than it keeps, and it throws it away from the two edges where props, hands and context usually sit.
The intersection, which is the number that actually matters
Now run the same square through a whole set of shapes and ask what region survives all of them. Because each crop is centered, the surviving region is also centered, and its size is easy to state. Take the narrowest target ratio in your set and the widest:
safe box height = 1 ÷ widest ratio (if over 1) Both expressed as a fraction of the square's side. Multiply them for the fraction of the area you can rely on.
Worked: a marketplace listing photo
A first listing photo on Etsy is shown in three documented shapes — square, landscape and portrait. Using 4:3 and 3:4 as the stand-ins for those, the widest is 1.333 and the narrowest is 0.75. The safe box is 75% wide by 75% tall, which is 56.3% of the area. On a 2000 px master that is a centered 1500 × 1500 px square. Everything you need a buyer to see — the whole silhouette of the product, not just its middle — has to sit inside that. Worked: the same photo pushed to social
Now add the shapes a feed asks for: 4:5, 9:16 and 1.91:1. The narrowest is now 0.5625 and the widest is 1.91. The safe box collapses to 56.3% wide by 52.4% tall — 29.5% of the area. On the same 2000 px master that is a centered 1125 × 1047 px rectangle, barely more than a quarter of the picture you took.
Adding Pinterest's 2:3 to that set changes nothing — 9:16 is already narrower, and the intersection is set by the extremes, not by how many shapes you list. That is the useful part of the formula: you only ever have to look at your narrowest and widest target. It is also the warning. One file that must serve both a 1.91:1 link card and a 9:16 vertical is being asked to work inside 30% of itself, and no amount of careful editing changes the arithmetic. At that point you are not cropping, you are shooting twice.
The tension nobody warns you about: fill versus margin
Everything above says leave margin. Amazon's published standards for a main image say the opposite: the product should fill roughly 85% of the frame, on a pure white background at RGB 255, 255, 255 (Seller Central guidance, checked July 2026). Those two pieces of advice are not contradictory, they apply to different jobs. An Amazon main image is presented in a single, controlled frame where the risk is looking small and cheap next to competitors. An Etsy first photo is fed through several shapes where the risk is losing an edge. A file that satisfies both at once does not exist, and trying to make one is how sellers end up with a photo that is simultaneously too tight for the mobile crop and too loose for the category grid.
The practical resolution is to keep one generous master and derive from it, rather than to keep one finished file and reuse it. Shoot with margin, then crop up to 85% fill for the Amazon slot and leave the margin intact for everything that will be re-shaped.
Resolution: the loss is smaller than it looks
Area percentages sound alarming, but pixel counts on an edge fall much more slowly than area, because area is the product of two dimensions. The Etsy safe box keeps 56.3% of the area but 75% of each dimension. So a 2000 px square still yields 1500 px along each side of the safe box — comfortably above the 635 px floor below which Etsy demotes a listing in search results, and above the 500 px short side its video slot asks for.
Even the punishing crops are survivable if you started large. A 9:16 crop out of a 24 megapixel camera frame (6000 × 4000) keeps the full 4000 px of height and 2250 px of width. A 9:16 crop out of a stock 12 MP phone photo (4032 × 3024) still leaves 1701 × 3024. Neither is anywhere near a resolution problem. What you lose to cropping is composition, not sharpness — which is precisely why sellers underestimate it. A cropped photo still looks crisp; it just no longer shows the thing you were selling.
Three assumptions worth checking rather than trusting
- That the crop is centered. It usually is, and every number on this page assumes it. But some layouts anchor to the top of an image, and a top-anchored crop of a 9:16 frame behaves nothing like a centered one. If a platform's output surprises you, this is the assumption that broke.
- That the ratio is what a blog said it is. Marketplaces rarely publish exact thumbnail ratios. The difference between 4:3 and 5:4 moves the safe box by 2.5% of the height — irrelevant. The difference between assuming 4:5 and actually facing 9:16 moves it by a quarter of the width, which is not. Get the extremes roughly right and the middle takes care of itself.
- That the shape set is fixed. It is not. Platforms change grid shapes, and the cheapest insurance is a master with margin on all four edges rather than a master tuned to today's layout.
Turning this into a habit
The whole discipline reduces to one instruction at the tripod: frame so the product and anything that must be read sit inside the middle three-quarters, and treat the outer quarter as expendable. Then verify rather than hope.
