T-Shirt Print Placement Measurements

Two mistakes make a printed shirt look homemade, and neither of them is about the artwork. Prints go on too high, and they go on too small. Both are fixed by working from measurements instead of from what looks right on a monitor.

The starting numbers for an adult medium

Front centre print 10–12″ wide, top edge 2–3″ below the collar seam. Left chest 3–4″ wide, 3–4″ down, offset about 3.5″ from the centre line. Full back 10–12″ wide, 3–4″ below the back collar seam.

Start with the width, not the artwork

A front centre print on an adult tee is usually somewhere around ten to twelve inches wide. Most people find that number surprising, and it is the single most common correction to make.

The reason is that a monitor destroys your sense of scale. Artwork that fills a large screen at 100% zoom feels substantial, then arrives on a garment twenty inches across and looks like a postage stamp somebody stuck to a chest. The screen has no reference object; the shirt does.

So decide the print width in inches first and fit the artwork to it, rather than designing something and then guessing how big to print it. If you want a genuine reality check, print the design at true size on paper and hold it against a shirt you own. It takes two minutes and it is the only foolproof method.

How far below the collar

The drop is measured from the collar seam at the centre front to the top edge of the artwork. Not from the top of the garment — a shirt laid flat has an inch or so of neckline curve above the seam, and measuring from there puts your print about an inch too high.

Two to three inches is the usual range on an adult tee. Less than that and the design reads as a badge stuck onto the neck; on an actual body it disappears under the chin, which is exactly why prints that looked fine in a flat mockup look wrong in a customer photo. Much more than three inches and it slides toward the stomach.

Different placements want different drops, and the logic is worth understanding rather than memorising.

The full back takes a larger drop than the front for a physical reason: the back collar seam sits higher on the body than the front one, so an identical drop measurement lands the back print higher on the wearer. The oversized front placement goes the other way — it starts higher precisely because it is taller and needs the room.

Left chest is the one people get wrong

Left chest prints follow different rules entirely, and two things about them are counterintuitive.

They are smaller than expected — typically three to four inches wide, not five or six. And they sit lower than expected, roughly level with the armpit rather than up near the shoulder. Placed high, a left chest logo migrates toward the shoulder seam and reads as a misprint.

They are also offset from the centre front, not centred within the wearer's left half of the shirt. Around three and a half inches from the centre line to the centre of the design is a sound starting point on an adult tee. Centring it in the left half puts it too far out, near the armhole.

Scaling across sizes

A design centred on a 5XL at the same width as a small looks lost; the same file on a youth tee runs close to the seams. Print width should track the garment's flat chest width, which changes a lot across a size run — an adult tee goes from roughly 16″ flat at XS to 32″ at 5XL.

There is a useful pattern hiding in that table: across the whole range, the front print width sits at roughly half the garment's flat chest width — about 55% in the middle sizes, drifting down toward 47% at the extended end. If you only remember one rule, measure the blank flat across the chest and halve it.

What does not transfer is the collar drop. Children's garments want proportionally less of both width and drop, and scaling an adult design down by a flat percentage usually still looks oversized on a toddler tee — the drop especially, because a toddler's neckline is short. Work from the width column and set the drop separately rather than scaling the whole layout as one block.

Garment type changes the usable band

A hoodie of the same nominal size has a narrower workable area than a tee: the hood gathers fabric at the top and the pouch pocket takes the bottom. Tank tops lose width to the armholes. Infant bodysuits have a snap gusset eating the lower front, so wide-and-shallow artwork works far better than tall artwork.

What print providers actually accept

Everything above is about what looks right. What is possible is set by whoever prints the garment, and that constraint overrides taste.

Direct-to-garment printers press onto a fixed platen, so there is a hard maximum print area per machine and per product. Providers frequently cap youth garments well below what a proportionate scale-down would suggest. If your intended width exceeds the platen, the provider either rejects the file or silently scales it down — and a silent scale-down shifts your whole composition relative to the collar.

Two practical rules follow. Check the platen size for the specific product, not the provider in general. And export at 300 DPI for the largest width you plan to print, letting the printer scale down rather than up: downscaling is lossless in appearance, upscaling is not. Why does my design look so much smaller on the shirt than on screen?

Can one design file cover youth through 5XL?

It is a compromise most sellers accept, but two or three files are better. A twelve-inch design looks lost on a 5XL and crowds the seams on a youth small. The usual middle ground is one file for youth, one for standard adult and one for extended sizes. Export at 300 DPI for the largest width you intend to print.

What happens if my width exceeds the print provider's platen?

The platen wins, every time. If your intended width exceeds it, the provider will either reject the file or scale it down without asking — and a silent scale-down shifts your composition relative to the collar. Check the platen size for the specific product before you export, not after.
